TOPIC: English expression: Back to the drawing board

English expression: Back to the drawing board 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 1
This is not a true story.

Yesterday, I asked my coworker to make something for me. After I explained everything to him I asked, "Does everything make sense?
He said, "Yeah, I get it."
Do you think you can handle it on your own?”
“Yeah, I won’t need any help. It will be a piece of cake.”

After half a day he showed me his work. It was completely different to what I had asked for!
I explained what I wanted to him again.
“Oh no,” he said, “I can’t use this. It's back to the drawing board for me.”
I asked him, “Do you think you can handle it on your own?”
“No”, he said, “I will probably need help with it.”
Ok, I can give you a hand.”

What does handle it mean?
What does a piece of cake mean?
What does back to the drawing board mean?

"To handle it" means "to deal with it" or "to manage to do it".
"A piece of cake" means very easy.
"Back to the drawing board" is a difficult one. I think it means "very difficult"?????

My example sentences:
There are many things I can't handle by myself at work. So I need my co-workers' help and advice.

Learning and mastering a foreign language is certainly NOT a piece of cake.

Making a sentence with the expression "back to the drawing board" is back to the drawing board for me absolutely!

Yes! This is correct.

"A piece of cake" means very easy.
Again correct!

"Back to the drawing board" is a difficult one. I think it means "very difficult"?????
I'm afraid that this is not correct. Back to the drawing board means something hasn't worked and that you need to start the project again from the start. You need to start the project from scratch!

My example sentences:
There are many things I can't handle by myself at work. So I need my co-workers' help and advice.

Learning and mastering a foreign language is certainly NOT a piece of cake.

Great sentences! They have captured the meanings well

Do you know what from scratch means?

"From scratch" means "from the very beginning".
So "It's back to the drawing board for me" means "I have to do it from the very beginning".
The example sentence would be...
Mike spent all weekend doing the assignment, but he lost it on his way to school. It's back to the drawing board for him.

I usually use this idiom to show that something was a failure. In your example English sentence the reason he had to start again was not because it was a failure, but because he lost it.
I think this sentence is still ok, but in general the reason they start again is because it doesn't work.

"From scratch" means "from the very beginning".
Excellent answer!

Good job

So how about this?

Mike spent all weekend doing the assignment, but it wasn't really what his teacher expected to do. It is back to the drawing board for him.
